What: Companies such as Shield GEO, Oyster HR or have emerged with new services in recent years, allowing other organisations to hire employees globally, without having to worry about local employment/payroll, tax and compliance laws. These companies are referred to as Employers of Record – they serve as the employer for tax purposes while the employee performs work at a different company. The employer of record takes on the responsibility of traditional employment tasks and liabilities. Oyster HR also offer local HR services, and medical insurance benefits for global employees, specialised for the location they live in. These are not specialised nomad services, but services for globally-hiring organisations.

Other online HR services exist, including services to answer any internal or company-specific questions employees may have when new to the company, making it easier for employees to ask the question to the right person.

So what: Enabling employers to easily hire the best candidates globally, making work hiring easily distance independent. These companies also offer services for companies to overview their employees and where they are hired. The services offered also contribute to well-structured onboarding in an important way – as previously mentioned, this is critical for employee retention, especially under pandemic times: it is much harder for employees to feel integrated into company culture when working from home. However, this is not a new phenomenon: freelancing platforms offering these services have existed for a long time, but now we are seeing the shift to supporting large organisations.
